Having a bit of luck with their breeding programs. Pity there isn’t somewhere for them in the wild.

Melbourne Zoo’s newly-born baby elephant is making its public debut.

The calf was born on Friday and is the zoo’s first male Asian elephant.

There will be a competition to name the baby elephant in the coming weeks.

The zoo’s elephants curator Jan Steele says the calf is energetic and a bit cheeky.

“He’s been running around already even though during the birth his back legs got compressed quite a bit and we needed to do a lot of massage on his back legs to get them working right,” she said.

“It was very, very difficult – the baby was very large and at one point had gotten wedged in the birth canal for about four hours.

“Now he is just racing up and down and climbing around his mum and his auntie.”
