Astrocytes Control Nerve Cell Connections

Astrocytes, star-shaped cells in the brain were discovered about a century ago. At that time, they were believed to play only bit roles in the brain. but recent research indicates that they play important part in providing nerve cells (neurons) with the energy they need to function and communicate with one another, by signaling blood to deliver the cell fuels glucose and oxygen to them. When out of whack,they could trigger disorders such as autism and schizophrenia. Plentiful in the brain as neurons, they may control blood flow and consequently the nerve cell connections.
