The Murderous Rampage of a Temple Elephant

April 25, 2008
It was a black day for the small temple town of Irinjalakkuda, famous for its much revered Koodalmanikyam temple in the state of Kerala in southern India. As is the wont of temple festivals in these parts, a magnificent array of bedecked elephants had taken stand to accompany the divine procesion taking out the deity. Suddenly one of the elephants,Thiruvalla Unnikrishnan by name, a known trouble maker, went berserk. For the next three and a half hours, till the tranqulizer squad could reach all the way from nearby bigger town of Thrissur, Unnikrishnan let loose a reign of terror renting his full fury. The raging elephant trampled under its foot two ,one a a woman and the other a young man, besides goring another man to death. A full scale enquiry has been ordered by the state government.
