U.S. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, and state and local Democrats and union leaders blasted the Bush administration’s continued commitment to Iraq on Monday, saying the money spent on the war could provide universal health care for all Americans.

“If we could re-orient the priorities of this country, get out of Iraq and put the resources to providing health care to our people and better schools for our children, we’d be on our way … to being the more perfect union we need to be,” Davis said at a Labor Day rally sponsored by the Central Alabama Labor Federation AFL-CIO.

More than 3,000 people attended the rally and picnic at Tannehill State Park, during which the union launched its new health care campaign. The campaign was introduced at other Labor Day rallies nationwide, said Kirk Patrick, president of the Central Alabama Labor Federation.
